The Full Story
Horse Welfare Literacy
Ashton (2026)
Horse welfare literacy is not about knowing more than someone else. It is about becoming more capable of seeing what matters to the horse. The horse does not benefit because we can quote research papers, explain learning theory or describe the Five Domains. The horse benefits when that knowledge changes what we notice, how we think, the decisions we make and, ultimately, what the horse experiences.

Like literacy itself, horse welfare literacy extends far beyond the acquisition of knowledge. Knowing the alphabet does not make someone literate. Equally, understanding learning theory or welfare science does not necessarily change how horses experience us.Literacy emerges when knowledge becomes understanding, understanding becomes action, and action improves the lived experience of horses.

That distinction matters because horses do not experience what we know.

They experience what we do.

Horse Welfare Literacy

The human capability to integrate equitation science and welfare science into everyday decisions that improve the lived experience of horses.
Why Horse Welfare Literacy Matters
Equitation science and welfare science have transformed what we know about horses.
Horse welfare literacy is what determines whether horses ever experience the full benefit of that knowledge.
